Building future careers in construction for young people in Stockwell

28 April 2022

On Friday 22 April, we joined our construction contractors Claritas on site to welcome six students from a local comprehensive school for a construction careers event at our Aytoun Road scheme in Stockwell. This was the latest event in our partnership with Claritas to deliver employment skills and training. The event was facilitated with the support of Construction Youth Trust and the London Borough of Lambeth. We work in partnership with Lambeth Council to provide employment and training opportunities for local Lambeth residents who are interested in careers in construction. These can range from jobs, apprenticeships, training work experience and school and college insight days/career talks.

The Year 11 students who took part in this careers day were given a site induction, followed by an insightful talk on the different careers within construction. There was then a site tour where they were able to have some hands-on experience with the brick laying team and the scaffolders. The day was a great success and rewarding for all involved. It provided the opportunity for local students to gain a real insight to a live site and opportunities available within the construction sector.

We’re committed to helping young people in the communities we operate in to gain a better understanding of the many opportunities available in the construction industry, by inviting them to our sites so they can see this in action. We hope to continue collaborating with organisations such as Construction Youth Trust who have connected us with young people who are eager to learn more about careers in construction.

Employment and training opportunities for residents

We work across London, Hertfordshire and the Southeast and we’re committed to making sure that local people benefit from the development and regeneration work we do. We work with our contractors and the relevant local authorities to provide local people with opportunities to improve their construction skills and enhance their future employment prospects. Our Employment and Skills Manger Kamara Jackson builds relationships with local schools, colleges, universities, and job brokerage services in the communities we work in to support our delivery of employment and training activities.

We aim to:

  • Secure goods and services from local contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers to support employment in the local community, where financially and practically feasible
  • Provide opportunities for local residents to access jobs created through the construction of our homes
  • Increase economic activity in the local area
  • Support the development of employment skills within the local community.

If you are interested in a career within construction, check out all our current opportunities on the Employment and Training section of our website, or email us at building.futures@networkhomes.org.uk
