Ensure you keep safe with fireworks

There are lots of fireworks at this time of year which can be quite exciting, but it's important to keep yourself and those around you safe. If you're planning on using fireworks, then please ensure you familiarise yourself with the following tips to ensure you stay safe:  

• Only use fireworks in clear open spaces, away from buildings and at a safe distance from trees. Fireworks are not permitted on our estates or schemes.
• Don't use fireworks in any public place without the permission of the landowner. 
• Only buy fireworks from registered and reputable sellers. When buying fireworks, only buy those which carry the CE mark. 
• Keep children away from fireworks. 
• Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks. 
• Make sure that the fire is out, and surroundings are made safe before leaving. 
• Never return to a firework once it has been lit. 
• Don't put fireworks in pockets and never throw them.

Fireworks tips for people with sensory issues 

Pets can find the loud bangs and bright lights very scary, and this year Classic FM and the RSPCA teamed up on bonfire night to present classical music and playlists to help calm and settle any anxious pets. Check out the playlist below to help keep your pets safe.

Did you know? 

• It is against the law to carry fireworks in public if you're under 18 
• Fireworks must not be sold to anyone who is under 18 
• It is an offence to let fireworks off during night hours (11pm to 7am), except on Bonfire Night (midnight), Diwali, New Year's Eve, and Chinese New Year (1am) 
• It is an offence under the Explosives Act 1875 to tamper with or modify fireworks 

Sparkler safety 

Sparklers are often viewed as being harmless, but they burn at fierce temperatures, equivalent to a welding torch. If you’re planning on using sparkler, please follow these top tips to ensure you and those around you are safe: 

• It is recommended that sparklers are not given to children under 5 
• Always direct a sparkler away from people’s faces 
• Make sure everyone handling sparklers wears gloves 
• Hold sparklers at arm’s length while being lit and only light one at a time 
• Don’t wave sparklers too close to other people.
• Never hold a baby in your arms while you are holding a sparkler 
• When the sparkler has finished put it in a bucket of cold water 

Bonfire safety 

Bonfires are not permitted in our residential areas, if you would like to attend a bonfire, please look to attend an official event in your local area.
